Eva Gabrielsson lived with Stieg Larsson for 30 years (they worked together for 32 years).
Unfortunately, Stieg Larsson had not written a valid will before he died in 2004. So Eva Gabrielsson was left bereft, without any rights in or income from the Millennium series. Instead all the money from the success of the books goes to Stieg Larsson’s brother and father, who also administer the rights. And the two parties are not in good standing with each other. Unfortunately.
Why? Don’t ask – family stuff, I guess. It always get’s decidedly un-nice, especially when a loved one dies, people haven’t talked for years and millions of inheritance are in the balance. Trust me, I have a little bit of experience with that schtick after my grandfather died and he hadn’t written a book-series worth millions. He just had an old car and a small house.
Now there are two issues at stake here. The first is to make sure that Eva Gabrielsson gets just a litte bit of financial security in a difficult time.
You can do that by clicking over to the website www.supporteva.com. “We hope that together we can help her pay the legal bills she has accumulated and assist in enabling her to win the right to administer the Millennium series in the future,” as it says on the front page of the site.
I think the first part is the most important here. The rights I’ll get back to. But she’s a widow now, if not legally then in fact. And she could probably do with some help to take her mind a little bit off her loss – and anger. Whatever it is about. It’s easier this way. So if you want to support her – don’t do it out of righteous anger about her family-in-law. Do it because you want to make it easier for her to forgive them.
So give something if you want. But give it not with annoyance but with a little prayer that those people – Eva and her family-in-law – eventually will be able to see and understand and accept enough of other’s feelings to reconcile.
’cause that’s pretty much the only thing that’ll work for them – and the rest of the world – in the long run.
Even Lis Salander would have to learn that … eventually ![]()
