The Missing Maps from Tattoo
So you read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and it was great and … you lost it a bit there about all the names and that island and those locations. Well, it turns out that Larsson’s original maps of Hedeby Island weren’t included (!) in the English translation of the first book in the Millennium trilogy.
But never fear! Reg Keeland, Stieg Larsson’s English translator, has generously provided fans with English editions of the maps for free download. Now you can make your very own inlay-map (any size you want) to your personal copy of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Here they are:

Where is Hedeby Island relative to Stockholm. I cannot find it on a map. Is it a real place? K

Hedestad and Hedeby Island are fictional places, but the filming location was Gnesta in Sweden.

Thank you for the maps. I love the book but was getting confused with the Vanger family tree and locations on the island this is going to make the book even more enjoyable.

You’re welcome – also for reminding my guilty consciousness that I once wanted to do a Vanger-family-map. Hopefully the time-fairy will allow me to do it some time soon.

Thank you for posting the maps. I started to draw one up from descriptions in the book and I thought “Wait a minute. This must be online somewhere.” And sure enough… Thanks again.

My son gave me the complete set, and I really wanted a map. I asked if he found one, or if the area was real. So tonight I now have a map. Many thanks.

You’re welcome! But I’m really indebted to Reg Keeland, Stieg Larsson’s English translator who gave me permission to make them available – just for the fans!
P.S. Hedeby is a fictitious place, but the maps are real enough

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the maps. I won’t tell you how much time I wasted on Google Maps before I found out Hedeby is fictional. :/

Is it just me or does it seem that Cecilia and Isabella’s houses should be switched? I thought for sure that the first book explains that Cecilia and Harald were neighbors.

(NERD ALARM)
I took the liberty of finding the passage from Dragon that you refer to. It seems that Mr. Keeland got it right:
Vanger guided Blomkvist out towards the point, identifying one house after the other. The village consisted of six buildings on the west side of the road and four on the east. The first house, closest to Blomkvist’s guest house and the Vanger estate, belonged to Henrik Vanger’s brother Harald. It was a rectangular, two-storey stone building which at first glance seemed unoccupied. The curtains were drawn and the path to the front door had not been cleared; it was covered with a foot and a half of snow. On second glance, they could see the footprints of someone who had trudged through the snow from the road up to the door.
“Harald is a recluse. He and I have never seen eye to eye. Apart from our disagreements over the firm—he’s a shareholder—we’ve barely spoken to each other in nearly 60 years. He’s ninety-two now, and the only one of my four brothers still alive. I’ll tell you the details later, but he trained to be a doctor and spent most of his professional life in Uppsala. He moved back to Hedeby when he turned seventy.”
“You don’t care much for each other, and yet you’re neighbours.”
“I find him detestable, and I would have rather he’d stayed in Uppsala, but he owns this house. Do I sound like a scoundrel?”
“You sound like someone who doesn’t much like his brother.”
“I spent the first twenty-five years of my life apologising for people like Harald because we’re family. Then I discovered that being related is no guarantee of love and I had few reasons to defend Harald.”
The next house belonged to Isabella, Harriet Vanger’s mother.
“She’ll be seventy-five this year, and she’s still as stylish and vain as ever. She’s also the only one in the village who talks to Harald, and occasionally visits him, but they don’t have much in common.”
“How was her relationship with Harriet?”
“Good question. The women have to be included among the suspects. I told you that she mostly left the children to their own devices. I can’t be sure, but I think her heart was in the right place; she just wasn’t capable of taking responsibility. She and Harriet were never close, but they weren’t enemies either. Isabella can be tough, but sometimes she’s not all there. You’ll see what I mean when you meet her.”
Isabella’s neighbour was Cecilia Vanger, the daughter of Harald…

Am half way through the book and reading like mad to finish before my book group meets in 4 days to discuss. It is great, but was getting bogged down not being able to visualize everything so finally “googled” and found these maps! Awesome! Will take to the discussion! Of course, now I’ll have to read the next two books! Was in Stockholm 2 years ago and wish I’d been aware of the book, then. Tant pis!!!

THANK YOU! I’m behind the times, just starting the series (yah, yah, I know) and I was really happy to find this. Most authors include maps of complicated and important fictional locations, I was curious why they didn’t have anything like that in my book.

i couldnt get the head or tail of the location , thanks for the map,,

Could anyone please identify me the bridge through which they pass several times in the movie and which is blocked because of the accident?

I spent a lot of time examining the map of Sweden so I’d know where things were going on. Actually found the general area of these fictional places. He gives a very good description in book one, page 84 in the English paperback with the bright yellow cover. Also found location of Millennium office and Micke’s apartment just by using Google (but not Google maps).
Really appreciate having these maps. Thanks!

I just started “Dragon Tattoo” and realized as soon as I got to Hedeby Island that a map would greatly enhance the experience. Thank you so much for posting it. Next I’m anticipating I’ll need action figures,
as I’m extremely visual. I am so excited to get into the adventure!

Thanks a lot for the maps. I think they are very important to follow what Blomkvist will be doing in that island.
I’m just arriving with him at Hedeby… today I ordered the 2 next novels!
